Ruling on Hanging Pictures

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on hanging pictures in homes and elsewhere?

A: Praise be to Allah alone, and after:
The ruling on this is prohibition if the pictures are of living beings, whether from the children of Adam or others; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) :
Spare no portrait unwiped out, and leave not a high grave unlevelled.ألا تدع صورة إلا طمستها، ولا قبرا مشرفا إلا سويته
Riyad as-Salihin 1687
Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih, and because it is established from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she hung a curtain with pictures on it on her terrace, so when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he tore it down and his face changed (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said:
The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life that which you have created.'يا عائشة، إن أصحاب هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة، ويقال لهم أحيوا ما خلقتم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam)
Narrated by Muslim and others.
But if the picture is on a carpet that is trodden upon or a cushion that is sat upon, there is no harm in that; because it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he was expecting Jibril, so when Jibril came, he refused to enter the house, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, and he said:
There is an idol in the house, a curtain with pictures on it, and a dog, so he ordered that the head of the idol be cut off, and that the curtain be made into two cushions placed in a corner to be sat upon, and he ordered that the dog be taken outإن في البيت تمثالا وسترا فيه تصاوير وكلبا، فأمر برأس التمثال أن يقطع، وبالستر أن يتخذ منه وسادتان منتبذتان توطآن، وأمر بالكلب أن يخرج
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did that, and Jibril (peace be upon him) entered.
Narrated by al-Nasa'i and others with a good chain, and in the aforementioned hadith, the dog was a puppy of al-Hasan or al-Husayn under a bed in the house, and it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Angels do not enter the house where there is a picture, or a dogلا تدخل الملائكة بيتا فيه صورة ولا كلب
Sunan Abi Dawud 227Da'if (Al-Albani)
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and this story of Jibril indicates that a picture on a carpet or the like does not prevent the angels from entering, and similarly, what is established in the authentic narrations from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she made a cushion from the aforementioned curtain for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to sit on.
