All praise is due to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. Then: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the Director General of the General Administration for Awareness and Guidance at the General Presidency for the Prohibition of Evil and the Commanding of Good, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, with number (2814) and date 3/8/1426 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is: Regarding the well known as (the Well of Spit), located in the 'Asfan area, belonging to the Jammum district in the Makkah region, to which some
pilgrims and visitors, among others, come to seek blessing and healing with its water, claiming that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by this well and spat in it. Many people have attached themselves to it, and its water has come to be sold to people.
After studying the inquiry, the Committee answered that it is not established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spat in the aforementioned well. And even if it were established, it is not permissible to seek blessing from it; rather, it is a religious innovation. This is because the water in wells is renewed, which makes it certain that nothing of the effect of the saliva of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remains in these wells after such a long period. This is indicated by the fact that the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not seek blessing from the water of those wells.
