Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. Then: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Guidance, No. (334 \ 416 \ 1), dated 11 \ 2 \ 1416 AH, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with No. (1395) and dated 20 \ 3 \ 1416 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is as follows:
Reference is made to the Ministry’s letter No. (163 \ K \ M), dated 11 \ 2 \ 1415 AH, sent to Your Eminence regarding the request to express your views on naming mosques after the names of the Companions or famous Muslims, taking into account the mosques established by people of good who wish to name them after their own names. We hope Your Eminence will graciously provide information on this matter. The text of the referenced letter is: We inform Your Eminence that this Ministry is currently studying the issue of naming and numbering mosques in the Kingdom. It has been proposed that mosques established in the future be named after the Companions or famous Muslims, taking into account the mosques established by people of good who wish to name them after their own names. We hope that after Your Eminence has reviewed this, you will graciously express your views on the matter.
