Fatwa number ( 20032 )
Q: I am a Bedouin, and I am about forty kilometers from the hospital. At the time of the pre-dawn meal, my wife went into labor. I was taking her to the hospital, and on the same road, she gave birth. After the Fajr prayer, I was covered in blood from my wife and the fetus, and there is no
water available to me to wash the blood, as some people tell me: "Break your fast, for it is impurity." So I do not know whether it is permissible for me to break my fast or to continue my fast. If I break my fast, O Shaykh, what is the ruling in this matter, since I know nothing about it?
A: The blood from your wife due to childbirth that got on your clothes and body does not affect the validity of your fast. Although this blood is ritually impure, it is not among the things that invalidate the fast, nor among the things that break the ablution if you were in a state of ablution. However, it is obligatory to wash it from the body and the garment if you intend to pray, because one of the conditions of prayer is purity from ritual impurity in the body, the garment, and the place of prayer. If you broke your fast that day out of ignorance of this ruling, you are excused due to ignorance and you do not sin for it. But it is obligatory for you to make up the days you missed from Ramadan, to hasten in making them up, and not to return to such a thing in the future. You should ask about matters of your religion from one whose fatwa and knowledge are trusted, so that you may be well-informed about the matters of your religion and not commit what contradicts the Shari'ah of Allah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
