Prayer During Air Travel

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18405 )
Q: On behalf of myself and my colleagues working for Saudi Airlines at Tabuk Airport , I request a legal ruling regarding the following: 1- Due to flights during prayer times, such as the Friday prayer, we do not perform the prayer with the congregation for a full month, and we perform it as the midday prayer instead. 2- Regarding the sunset prayer, on some days we have work pressure and cannot leave our work stations until after the flights have departed, which results in delaying the sunset prayer until the time of the night prayer or even after the night prayer on some occasions. 3- The dawn prayer in winter: on some days we are unable to perform the prayer until after the sun has risen, due to a flight during the prayer time.
A: 1- There is no harm in performing the Friday prayer as the midday prayer at your place of work during the time of the midday prayer if you are unable to perform the Friday prayer with the Muslims. 2- It is not permissible to delay the sunset prayer from its time, and the same applies to the dawn prayer and other obligatory prayers. Rather, it is obligatory for the Muslim to pray them in their time, even if alone, if it is not possible for him to pray them in congregation with any of those who work with him; because Allah made them obligatory in their time, as He the Exalted said:
Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.إِنَّ الصَّلاَةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَوْقُوتًا
[An-Nisa 4:103]
, and He the Exalted said:
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
. And if it is possible for the Muslim to pray them in congregation with those who work with him at the place of work, it is obligatory for them to do so; otherwise, they should pray them in their time by taking turns, even if individually, due to the generality of the mentioned verse. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
