Fatwa number ( 17279 )
Q: What is the ruling on one who came to a country and prayed in a direction other than the qiblah by mistake, while knowing the direction of the qiblah, and he remembered this after the time of the prayer he performed had passed?
A: One who prays in a direction other than the qiblah due to negligence on his part, where he did not ask and did not look into the evidence that indicates the direction of the qiblah, must repeat the prayer; because
facing the qiblah is a condition for the validity of the prayer, provided one is able to do so. Therefore, he must repeat it. Likewise, one who prays in a direction other than the qiblah by mistake must repeat the prayer; because he neglected one of its conditions. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
