The first question of fatwa number ( 20355 )
Q1: ( May Allah have mercy on a man who knows his own worth ), "Excessive laughter kills the heart." Are these two athar or hadiths, who mentioned or narrated them, and what is their degree of authenticity?
A6: The phrase you mentioned in the wording: "May Allah have mercy on a man who knows his own worth," we do not know of any basis for it in the narrations after research and tracing. We did not find it in the books of the trusted Imams of hadith, nor is it attributed to any of the Companions or the Tabi'un as far as we know. It is one of the common expressions on people's tongues, and we do not know who said it.
As for the hadith that came in the wording: "Excessive laughter kills the heart," it was narrated by Ibn Majah in his (Sunan) from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the wording: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not laugh a lot, for laughing a lot deadens the heart.لا تكثروا الضحك فإن كثرة الضحك تميت القلب
Sunan Ibn Majah 4193Hasan (Darussalam)
. Al-Busayri said in (Al-Zawa'id): This is a sound chain, its narrators are trustworthy. And Al-Qudha'i and Al-Tabarani narrated something similar. And Ibn Majah also narrated it through the route of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa' from Abu Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
O Abu Hurairah, be cautious, and you will be the most devoted of people to Allah. Be content, and you will be the most grateful of people to Allah. Love for people what you love for yourself, and you will be a (true) believer. Be a good neighbor to your neighbors, and you will be a (true) Muslim. And laugh little, for laughing a lot deadens the heart.
Sunan Ibn Majah 4217Da’if (Darussalam)
. He said in (Al-Zawa'id): This is a good chain. And the Imam Ahmad , Al-Tirmidhi , Al-Bayhaqi , and others narrated something similar, and Al-Tirmidhi said: A strange hadith. The hadith has many other routes besides what was mentioned, and the least of its conditions is that it is good.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
