The third and fourth questions of Fatwa No. ( 18786 )
Q3: In our area, the shaykhs in the mosques recite Surah Tabaarak, the beginning of Surat al-Baqarah, and the Verse of the Throne , as well as the last verses of the same surah, and also the Mu'awwidhat (the chapters of seeking refuge), and Surat al-Fatihah after the 'Isha' adhan and before the prayer. What is the ruling in Islam regarding this? Is this established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?
A3: Reciting these verses or some of the surahs and the Mu'awwidhat, or the
Ibrahimiyah (the tashahhud) after the 'Isha' adhan and before the prayer, or after the taslim of every prayer in a collective manner, is a religious innovation (bid'ah) with no basis in the Shari'ah, for there is no evidence for it from the actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). What the Sunnah brought is the recitation of the Verse of the Throne after every obligatory prayer, following the dhikr; due to the hadith of Abu Umamah who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Bulugh al-Maram 2:220 . And it is reported that Surah al-Ikhlas and the two Mu'awwidhat are recited after every prayer; as narrated by Abu Dawud in his (Sunan) from 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir who said: Mishkat al-Masabih 969 . And in a narration of al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i : (with the two Mu'awwidhat) instead of the Mu'awwidhat. It should be recited: (Say: He is Allah, the One), (Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak), and (Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind) after every prayer, and it should be repeated three times after the Fajr and Maghrib prayers. Each person should recite it alone, to the extent that he can hear himself. Sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is prescribed at all times, but it is not prescribed in the collective manner mentioned in the question.
