Q: Is it permissible to call one of Allah’s servants by (Rahman or Rahim or Jabbar ) without the definite article?
A: It is permissible to name a person with a name that corresponds to a name of Allah that is not exclusive to Him, such as Malik (King), as in the Qur’an:[Yusuf 12:50] , and such as ‘Alim (All-Knowing) and Halim (Forbearing), as the Exalted said: [As-Saffat 37:101] , and He the Exalted said: [Adh-Dhariyat 51:28] , and such as Ra’uf (Compassionate) and Rahim (Merciful), as the Exalted said in describing His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): [At-Tawbah 9:128] . Knowing that there is a difference between the names of the Creator
and the names of the created, for nothing resembles Allah the Exalted, neither in His essence nor in His names and attributes, as the Exalted said:[Ash-Shuraa 42:11] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
