Fatwa No. ( 16756 )
Q: We are sending to your Excellency two sheets, one titled (The Beautiful Names of Allah) and the other titled:
Rather, worship [only] Allah and be among the grateful.
[Az-Zumar 39:66]
. These two sheets have become widespread among the general public. We ask you to kindly issue a ruling on them. This is the text of the two publications: The first:
Rather, worship [only] Allah and be among the grateful.
[Az-Zumar 39:66]
Verse (66) of Surat al-Zumar:
So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.
[Al-A'raf 7:157]
Verse (157) of Surat al-A'raf.
For them are good tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter. No change is there in the words of Allah. That is what is the great attainment.
[Yunus 10:64]
Verse (64) of Yunus.
Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter
[Ibrahim 14:27]
Verse (27) of Surat Ibrahim. Send these verses so that they may bring you good fortune and a favorable omen, and they have been distributed around the world nine times; they will bring you goodness and righteousness four days after they reach you, by the permission of Allah… etc. The second: The Beautiful Names of Allah: He is Allah, there is no god but He, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate, the King, the Holy, the Peace, the Believer, the Preserver, the Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme… etc. As for what follows, this is a blessed chain that has brought good to its writer. We ask that it be circulated among the believers. It is obligatory, O dear brother, to write thirty copies of it without putting a name and without a signature, and to send it to thirty of your acquaintances, friends, and believing brothers… etc.

A: What is mentioned regarding the attainment of benefit and the realization of good for the writer of these two letters or one of them, and the repelling of evil from him, is not correct. Rather, that is from lying and spreading superstitions among people, and diverting them from worshipping Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He), being sincere in religion to Him, turning to Him, and supplicating to Him in
seeking benefit and repelling harm. Therefore, it is not permissible to write them or send them to anyone, rather they must be destroyed. Even if something of what is desired were to occur, that would not indicate its permissibility, because that is from the category of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and al-istidraj (gradual drawing into sin). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
