Fatwa number ( 13698 )
Q: When I was about sixteen years old, my companion and I went to one of the wadis. There we found a young bull, and we wanted it to come down to the water so we could see how it swam. It tried to run away, so I met it on its path and threw a stone at it, killing it. After a while, my companion passed away, and I was unable to tell him what had happened. Now I want to make amends, but the heirs of the bull's owner are scattered. His wife is still in his house, and his three daughters are married. It is difficult to reach an agreement with these heirs other than the mother, meaning the wife. Your Eminence: Should I give his wife the price of the bull, which is estimated at 2,000 riyals, or distribute it among the heirs? Or should I give it in charity on behalf of its owner? And does my companion who was with me in the wadi bear any part of the price, or am I responsible for the whole of it?
A: It is obligatory for you to pay the value of the bull on the day you killed it, because you were the one who caused it by throwing a stone at it. You pay the value to its owner, or to his legal heirs, as long as its owner has passed away. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
