Q: Is it permissible to change the direction and place of a vow I made to Allah to another direction and place? I felt that the latter—direction and place—was more deserving and more entitled than the first.
A: The principle is that if a person specifies a particular place for his vow, such as vowing to give charity or build a mosque in a specific place, he is obligated to fulfill the vow in that specified place and direction, unless a legal impediment prevents him from doing so. However, if he transfers it to a better place, such as the two sacred sanctuaries , there is no harm in that. This is indicated by the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the man who vowed to slaughter camels at Buwani :. He ordered him to fulfill his vow in the place he had specified because it was free from impediments. And what indicates transferring a vow from a lesser place to a better place is his statement (peace and blessings be upon him) to the man who vowed to pray in the House of Wisdom: narrated by Abu Dawud and Ahmad .
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
