She vowed that if her son was transferred to Abha, she would slaughter two sacrificial animals

Fatwa No. ( 17342 )
Q: I have a brother who graduated from the academy as an officer and was appointed in Najran. After that, I made a vow that if he was transferred to Abha, I would slaughter two sacrificial animals, two sheep. However, I do not remember whether I specified that I would slaughter them and gather the family to eat them, or slaughter them and give them in charity . Praise be to Allah, he has been transferred to Abha, and I wish to fulfill my vow, if Allah wills. Should I slaughter them and give them in charity, or pay their value through the Islamic Relief Agency to fulfill my vow as charity, or what should I do with them? Or should I give their value to the poor and needy through the agency or the charitable association? Please issue a ruling for us, may Allah reward you with good, and may He prolong your life. Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.
A: It is obligatory for you to fulfill the vow you mentioned by slaughtering the two sheep you vowed to slaughter and distributing their meat to the poor and needy. The two sheep must be of the type that is acceptable for the 'Id sacrifice, namely a one-year-old sheep or older, and a two-year-old goat or older. May Allah reward you and make your affairs easy. We advise you not to make vows in the future, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade vows and said:
It does not (necessarily) bring good (in the form of substantial, and tangible results), but it is the meant whereby something is extracted from the miserly persons.إنه لا يأتي بخير، وإنما يستخرج به من البخيل
Sahih Muslim 1639c
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
