The first question of Fatwa No. ( 17827 )
Q1: Is it true that there is an expiation in money for a vow of fasting if it becomes impossible for the servant to fulfill it, and if so, what is the amount of this expiation for the vow of fasting?
A1: One who vows to fast specific days and then does not fast them must make them up, and he must expiate the delay with the expiation of an oath: freeing a believing slave, or feeding ten poor people, with each poor person receiving one and a half kilograms of food, or clothing ten poor people. If he is unable to do any of these three, he must fast three days; based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Ma'idah 5:89]
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

A1: One who vows to fast specific days and then does not fast them must make them up, and he must expiate the delay with the expiation of an oath: freeing a believing slave, or feeding ten poor people, with each poor person receiving one and a half kilograms of food, or clothing ten poor people. If he is unable to do any of these three, he must fast three days; based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.
