Fatwa No. ( 18994 )
Q: I made a vow upon myself a year ago. My vow was: if the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques is healed from the illness that struck him a year ago, I will perform the obligatory Hajj and fast for two months ; as thanks to Allah for the healing of the dear father. The question is: Do I perform the obligatory Hajj and fast, or is there an expiation for that, knowing that I am in debt for large amounts?
A: If the situation is as described, it is obligatory for this person to fulfill his vow, so he must perform Hajj and fast for two months; because this is a vow of obedience conditioned on a condition, and that condition has occurred. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6696 . And if he is unable to perform Hajj because of the debt, he must hasten to perform Hajj when he is able to do so; due to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [At-Taghabun 64:16] , and due to the saying of Allah the Exalted regarding the obligatory Hajj: [Ali 'Imran 3:97]
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
