Fatwa number ( 20862 )
Q: I previously made a vow, O Shaykh, and that was a long time ago. At that time, I was ill and I said: If Allah heals me, I will give in charity a fraction of my salary to the poor and the needy. For example, if my salary is (5500) riyals, I will give (500) riyals in charity; and similarly, if my salary is (7700) riyals, I will give (700) riyals in charity, and so on. Until now, I have not fulfilled my vow due to my financial circumstances at that time and up to now. I have spoken the vow with my tongue and written it on a paper that I have with me. I will fulfill my vow at the earliest opportunity after my circumstances improve. What should I do in my situation? And if I have vacant land at this time whose price has dropped, and by the will of Allah the Exalted I am optimistic that its price will increase due to the opening of a road nearby, what should I do? Should I sell it or wait for its price to improve, or what should I do? And is it permissible to delay the vow
according to a person's circumstances?
A: It is obligatory for you to fulfill the aforementioned vow because it is a vow of obedience. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6696 Since a period has passed during which you did not fulfill the vow, you must calculate the total amount that is due from you for that period and pay it out in one lump sum or in installments, according to your ability, because it is a debt in your trust. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
