Fatwa number ( 21403 )
Q: My wife was pregnant, and I vowed that whoever tells me and brings me news of a male child would receive a sum of five hundred riyals (500). When my wife gave birth, one of the nurses came to me and brought me the news , and the child was a boy, praise be to Allah. At that time, I did not have the amount I had vowed in my pocket. Days, months, and years passed until my son reached approximately twelve years of age, and up to the date of writing this question, I have not fulfilled the vow. I do not know about that nurse, nor do I know where she is due to the long time that has passed,
so that I can give her the vow for the good news. Dear Shaykh: My conscience is tormenting me, and I fear the anger of the Lord, especially since my son is suffering from continuous weakness and emaciation, and I fear that my failure to fulfill the vow is the cause. Please enlighten me and issue a ruling on my matter, and may you be rewarded.
A: You must search for the nurse who brought you the news of the child and pay her what you vowed. If it becomes impossible for you to find out who she is, then give the amount in charity with the intention that the reward of the charity is for her, and your obligation regarding the vow is discharged. May Allah guide everyone to what is good. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
