The third and fourth questions of Fatwa No. ( 4910 )
Q 3: A woman vowed that if her child recovered from a specific illness
she vowed to Allah the Exalted to give a specific amount, and when Allah the Exalted healed this patient, the woman forgot how much that amount was, and she is now confused. I ask your eminence to answer how much of the amount she should pay and how she should proceed, and is it permissible for her to give whatever she wants or not?
A 3: If the situation is as described, she must strive to determine and give what she believes to be most likely the amount she vowed. Then, if she remembers the amount later, if it is more than what she gave, it is obligatory for her to give the remainder to complete the vowed amount, in order to clear her conscience. If what she gave was more, the excess is considered voluntary charity.
Q 4: A woman vowed to Allah the Exalted that when her brother returned from his trip, she would slaughter a sheep. But I swear by Allah, who speaks the truth, that when this woman was asked: Did you vow to Allah or to someone else? Because many people among us vow to other than Allah, she said: I do not know whether my vow was to Allah or to someone else, so what is required of her now? Knowing that she specified the place where she would slaughter the sheep, and it is a place where slaughter is performed for other than Allah, should she slaughter it there?
A 4: This is a vow of disobedience, and she is not required to fulfill it. Rather, she must seek forgiveness and repent from it; for it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam) And she must expiate for it with the expiation of an oath.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
