Cursing Satan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19753 )
Q: I cursed Satan on one occasion, and when one of the brothers heard me, he rebuked me for it, saying that he had heard there is a prohibition against cursing Satan ; because if he is cursed, he becomes arrogant. Is what this brother said correct? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.
A : It is prescribed for a person, if Satan prompts him to commit sins, beautifies them for him, and whispers to him, or if he fears that he will be harmed by Satan’s scheme and the scheme of his allies, to seek refuge in Allah and take shelter in Him alone, to ward off His evil and harm from him. He should invoke the name of Allah and increase in His remembrance so that Allah turns Him away from him and repels his scheme, and so that he becomes small in his own self. Evidence for this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.
[Al-A'raf 7:200]
and His saying the Exalted:
(97) And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils, (98) And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me."
[Al-Mu'minun 23:97-98]
, and what is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he
I seek refuge in Allah the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the cursed Shaitan, from his madness, his arrogance, and his poetry.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 242Hasan (Darussalam)
and when Imam Ahmad Imam Ahmad narrated it in his Musnad, vol. 5, p. 59, from Abu Tamimah al-Hujaymi , from the one who was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said:
I was riding behind him on a donkey, and the donkey stumbled, so I said: “May Satan be accursed.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: “Do not say: ‘May Satan be accursed,’ for when you say that, he becomes arrogant in his own self and says: ‘I have been defeated by my strength.’ But when you say: ‘Bismillah,’ his self becomes small until he is smaller than a gnat.”
, and Abu Dawud Abu Dawud narrated something similar in his Sunan. It is also mentioned in the book al-Samt wa Adab al-Lisan by Ibn Abi al-Dunya , p. 205, from Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: “Barely is Satan mentioned by a group of people without him being present among them. When he hears someone cursing him, he says: ‘I have cursed one who is cursed.’ And nothing cuts his back more than: La ilaha illa Allah.” This is the effective cure for warding off Satan’s harm from a person, for nothing repels the worst of the jinn except that. As for cursing Satan, Allah has cursed Him in His Book in more than one place, when He became arrogant and refused to obey Allah’s command to prostrate to Adam when He created him, a prostration of honor and reverence. Allah described Him as rajim (stoned) and la'een (cursed), so He is among those expelled from the mercy of Allah and His Paradise on the Day of Resurrection. Allah the Exalted said:
(117) They call upon instead of Him none but female [deities], and they [actually] call upon none but a rebellious Satan. (118) Whom Allah has cursed. For he had said, "I will surely take from among Your servants a specific portion.
[An-Nisa 4:117-118]

And He the Exalted said:
(34) [Allah] said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled. (35) And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."
[Al-Hijr 15:34-35]
. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also cursed him in prayer when he opposed him and tried to harm him and get the better of him. Imam Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
Abud Darda’ said: God’s Messenger stood up to pray and we heard him say, “I seek refuge in God from you”, then say, “I curse you with God’s curse,” three times, then he stretched but his hand as though he was taking something. When he finished the prayer we said, “Messenger of God, we heard you say something during the prayer which we have not heard you say before, and we saw you stretch out your hand.” He replied, “God’s enemy Iblis came with a flame of fire to put it in my face, so I said three times, ‘I seek refuge in God from you’. Then I said three times, ‘I curse you with God’s perfect curse', but he did not retreat. Thereafter I meant to seize him. I swear by God that had it not been for the supplication of my brother Solomon, he would have been bound and made an object of sport for the Medina children.”* * Cf. the tradition from Abu Huraira, p. 202. There it says, “my brother.” Here it is “our brother”, but the plural is often used for the singular. Muslim transmitted it.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1012
. Therefore, it is permissible for a person to curse Satan if he confronts him to harm him, or opposes him and whispers to him to lead him astray from the obedience of Allah. However, one should not neglect seeking refuge in Allah from him, increasing in the remembrance of Allah, and saying: Bismillah, and similar prescribed remembrances and supplications; so that the Muslim is protected by Allah from his evil,
and in accordance with the aforementioned verses and hadiths. A person should not make cursing Satan his habit without a cause, following the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
