The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 8895 )
Q6: If I speak about an open sinner or an oppressor, such as a drinker of intoxicants or a fornicator, is that forbidden backbiting or not?
A6 : If your speech about these people and their like is by way of joking and boasting, or by way of amusement or entertaining the company, for example, then that is forbidden backbiting; because of what it contains of spreading the immorality and making souls accustomed to it, and it leads to the dulling of souls, the extinguishing of jealousy, and the spread of evil. And if that is for the purpose of identifying him and clarifying his reality, so that his evil is avoided, and reporting from him, his companionship, his dealings, and his marriage alliance are avoided, for example, then it is not forbidden.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
