The third question of the fatwa number ( 6316 )
Q3: In the case of a marriage proposal, it is most often the case that the woman is described to the man, and it is necessary to mention her flaws and virtues; such as height and beauty, and so on. Do such descriptions fall under the category of backbiting? Also, people often ask about the family background and lineage, and this is common when asking about both the man and the woman, which puts the respondent in a difficult position, as he may end up backbiting a person without realizing it.
Vol. 3 : Mentioning the characteristics of the suitor and the prospective bride to introduce them to each other and to advise them, so that each is fully aware of the other before the marriage contract is concluded, is not considered backbiting, which Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. Rather, it is part of the advice that is commanded in the hadith: ... and so on, and it is part of cooperating in righteousness and good. And Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:2]. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
