Q: What is the ruling on praying in a mosque that contains a grave , where some of those we asked said:
If the grave is outside the mosque, even if it is connected to the mosque by a door, there is no harm. They cited as evidence that the Companions did not object to the burial of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque, nor to the burial of Abu Bakr and 'Umar in the same manner. They stated that if it is connected to the mosque but not facing the qiblah, it is disliked. If it is in the direction of the mosque's qiblah but separate from the mosque, even by a few steps, then pray, and there is no obstacle. I ask for your guidance, and may Allah reward you with good.
A : The intended meaning of building mosques over graves, which is prohibited in the hadiths, is: establishing a mosque over them in any location within the mosque; because this is one of the means to shirk (associating partners with Allah). Likewise, praying near them, even if no mosque is built over them, is doing so because that is taking them as places of worship, i.e., prayer areas; because this is also one of the means to shirk. As for the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the graves of his two companions (may Allah be pleased with them), they were outside the mosque in the room of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). When the mosque was expanded during the time of al-Walid ibn 'Abd al-Malik , the room was included in the mosque by the order of al-Walid , and that was not done with the consultation of the scholars. The point is: that the Prophet's Mosque (peace and blessings be upon him) was not built over a grave, and praise be to Allah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
