Bringing the television into the home and listening to it
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 2133 )
Q1: We have people in the city who are not scholars, but they sit with scholars and benefit from them. They have forbidden the television and said: If you bring it into your home, you are committing zina, your son is committing zina, and your wife is committing zina, may Allah protect us. So, is bringing the television into the home and listening to it forbidden or not?
A1: Listening to the television is permissible if what is heard is not forbidden; such as recitation of the Qur'an, religious lectures, commercial announcements, and political news. It is prohibited if what is heard is forbidden; such as obscene songs, lewd words, and men listening to the voices of female singers, even if the songs are not lewd, and the songs of men who act effeminately and behave in a feminine manner in their singing. In summary: bringing the television into the home and listening to it follows the ruling of what is heard, whether lawful or forbidden. And what is permissible from that may be prohibited due to excess in it, and its causing a person to waste time that he may be in greatest need of filling with what
returns benefit and much good to him, his family, and the ummah. The safest course is to refrain from bringing it in and listening to it; because it may be a means to hearing what is forbidden for him, and a path to seeing what gives rise to fitnah from naked images and their seductive movements. Perhaps the one who said that bringing the television into the home is zina means the zina of the ear listening to songs and the like, and the zina of the eye looking at the seductive images that appear on it, intending to deter from it and to increase the denunciation of those who use it. This is correct, but he should have added more explanation to persuade, and Allah is the Helper. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
