Ruling on Hanging Pictures and Allowing Dogs into the House
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This message is from Sudan, sent by one of the brothers, (A. A. A.). Our brother says: I heard that the angels do not enter a home that contains pictures or a dog. I ask you to explain this to me. And if the owner of the house needs a dog, what is the ruling?
Answer: Yes, it is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sunan Abi Dawud 227Da'if (Al-Albani) This is how it came in the authentic hadith. The picture that prevents [the angels from entering] is the forbidden kind, such as those hung on walls and on the doors of houses, and the three-dimensional statues found in the house, whether a three-dimensional image of a human, an animal, or a bird. These prevent the angels from entering, and it is not permissible to hang them or set them up in the house. This is based on the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) : Riyad as-Salihin 1687 Also, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a curtain with a picture on it on the door of one of 'A'ishah's rooms, he tore it and became angry, saying: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam) This indicates that pictures are not to be hung on walls or set up if they have a body; they are not to remain in the house, but must be removed, because they are forbidden and it is obligatory to remove them. This is also because they prevent the angels from entering, so they must be removed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: Sahih Muslim 2109a And it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him): .
Therefore, one must be cautious of this. And if pictures are present in a place, they must be dealt with by breaking and removing them, so that the command of Allah is fulfilled in them and the command of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is carried out, where he said:Riyad as-Salihin 1687.
However, if the picture is in a place that is trampled, such as a carpet, cushions, or the ground where the picture is drawn, these do not prevent [the angels from entering] because they are treated with contempt. It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he rebuked 'A'ishah for that curtain, 'A'ishah said: I made it into two cushions that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sit on. And it is established from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in al-Nasa'i and others that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had an appointment with Jibril, but Jibril was delayed. So he went out to wait for him, and Jibril came to him and said to him: This indicates that the picture in a hanging curtain prevents the angels from entering. Similarly, a picture set up in a mirror on the wall or a three-dimensional statue in the house; all of these prevent [the angels from entering] and are forbidden and not permissible.
As for what is on the ground, or on cushions, or on carpets that are walked on and trampled, this does not prevent the angels from entering. Likewise, a dog that has no legitimate reason for being there is what prevents the angels from entering. But if it has a legitimate reason, such as a hunting dog, a dog for livestock, or a dog for crops, this does not prevent [the angels from entering], because it is permitted. And what Allah has permitted does not prevent good. And success is from Allah. Yes.

Answer: Yes, it is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Angels do not enter the house where there is a picture, or a dog
Spare no portrait unwiped out
The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life that which you have created.'
إن أصحاب هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة ويقال لهم: أحيوا ما خلقتمthe most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of pictures
That he cursed the image-makers
Therefore, one must be cautious of this. And if pictures are present in a place, they must be dealt with by breaking and removing them, so that the command of Allah is fulfilled in them and the command of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is carried out, where he said:
Spare no portrait unwiped out, and leave not a high grave unlevelled.
However, if the picture is in a place that is trampled, such as a carpet, cushions, or the ground where the picture is drawn, these do not prevent [the angels from entering] because they are treated with contempt. That there is a statue in the house and a curtain with pictures in it, and that there is a dog in it. So [Jibril] ordered that the head of the statue be cut off, and ordered that the curtain be made into two cushions to be placed in a corner to be walked on, and ordered that the dog be taken out. He said: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did that—meaning: he did what Jibril said, cutting off the head of the statue, ordering the curtain to be made into two cushions, and taking out the dog. And they found a puppy at the door of their house for al-Hasan or al-Husayn, so they took it out. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out what Jibril said, Jibril entered
As for what is on the ground, or on cushions, or on carpets that are walked on and trampled, this does not prevent the angels from entering.
