Fatwa number ( 4101 )
Q: May Allah guide you, I have a family, and our ties with nearby and neighboring families compel us to watch television at their homes. Also, some of the boys, may Allah improve them, go secretly to watch it. Am I sinful if I buy a television set and place it in my home, while I monitor my family and teach them, as much as possible, what is harmful and what is beneficial in what is shown on it? Please give me a ruling, may Allah guide you, for I am confused. Is acquiring it lawful or forbidden?
A : Mixing with those whom a Muslim is compelled to join when visiting them and sitting with them in their engagement in forbidden matters is not permissible, and isolation is better than the company of the wicked. So the Muslim must restrain himself and his family from evil and its people, to preserve his religion and the religion of his family, for he is a shepherd and responsible for his flock. If he fulfills his duty, he is safe; if he does not and neglects monitoring his family, he is sinful. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
