Working at a Radio Transmission Station

Fatwa No. ( 17108 )
Q: We work at the radio transmission station in Abha, which amplifies the programs broadcast from Riyadh, and then rebroadcasts them. We are unable to do anything else there; rather, we are required to broadcast the same programs, which are as follows: the Holy Qur'an program, the general program, and the second program. Our question concerns the general program and the second program, as they broadcast a variety of content, including songs, serials, and other things, and the proportion of good in them is very small compared to the Holy Qur'an. Since we and some of our colleagues started working, only the Holy Qur'an broadcast is heard at the site. However, listeners outside the site hear all three programs. When a fault occurs in the program lines, we all listen to the three programs until the fault is repaired, and after that, only the Holy Qur'an broadcast is heard at the site. Your Eminence, the Mufti: Is our work permissible in the Shari'ah or not? May Allah reward you with good.
A: Singing and playing musical instruments such as the oud and the like, all of this is forbidden in the Shari'ah. It is not permissible to engage in it, nor to spread it, nor to assist in it.
Each person incurs sin to the extent of his work, and the earnings derived from it are foul and forbidden earnings; because it is cooperation in sin, and the texts on this matter are numerous and well-known. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
