Fatwa number ( 3341 )
Q: We had a sick child, and the doctor decided to perform surgery on his trachea. His mother vowed to fast an unspecified number of days if he recovered from the surgery. Allah willed it, but twenty days after the operation, a blockage occurred at the site of the surgery, and he passed away to the mercy of Allah the Exalted. What is the ruling on the fasting of this vow in this case, and what is its duration?
A: It is obligatory for his mother to fulfill her vow because he recovered from the surgery, and his death was due to an unforeseen cause. It is sufficient for her to fulfill her vow with the minimum of fasting, which is fasting one day, because she did not specify a duration. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
