Feeding in Expiation: Is It Permissible to Give Money?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 6892 )
Q: Is it permissible to feed a poor person by giving him money , and will the one who does so be rewarded? And is it sufficient if he gave him the value of a sa' in cash in riyals? And is it sufficient in place of food, or must the poor person be given food from one of the foods mentioned: (dates, or wheat, or barley, or rice)? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with the best reward.
A: If the feeding you are asking about is the obligatory feeding in the expiation for zihar, or for intercourse during the month of Ramadan, or for an oath that was broken, or for an old man or old woman breaking the fast in Ramadan because fasting is difficult for them, then nothing other than the specified feeding is sufficient in all of these cases, and it is not valid to substitute it with money. The same applies to zakat al-fitr in Ramadan. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
