Fatwa number ( 17057 )
Q: I am a man who has married a woman, who is my second wife. Her maternal uncle is her mother's brother, who is older than her. A man was breastfed with him within the first two years, more than five times. My wife's maternal uncle is her mother's brother from both her mother and father, and it is known among people that my wife's maternal uncle and the man who was breastfed
with him are brothers through breastfeeding. The question is: Is this man who was breastfed with my wife's maternal uncle considered a brother to my wife's mother , meaning is he my wife's maternal uncle? If the answer is yes, I have another question, which is the most important and the crux of the matter: Do I have the right to prevent him from greeting and visiting my wife, and am I sinful if I prevent him from greeting and entering my home? This is because he is weak in his religion, prays little, and smokes, and I do not feel safe regarding my household with him, as I am married to a first wife and have grown daughters? I repeat my question: Do I have the right to prevent him from greeting and entering the home, and am I sinful if I do so? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you.

A: If the aforementioned breastfeeding is established, and it is established that it was five breastfeedings or more within the first two years, and the breastfeeding was from your wife's mother or from another wife of your wife's maternal grandfather, then the breastfed man becomes a brother to your wife's mother, and a maternal uncle to your wife through breastfeeding. Consequently, he is a mahram (a relative one may not marry) to her. If there is a fear of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) from his entering upon her, he is prevented from doing so to ward off harm. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
