The questioner : Her second question is that she has two sisters married to her cousins, and disputes arose between our family and her cousins that necessitated severance between her brothers and her family and them, to the extent that her brother does not visit his sisters who married into their family, nor on any occasion, and he knows nothing about their conditions. Likewise, her mother has severed ties with her daughters to please her brother so that he would not be angry with her. Is there any sin on them for that or not?

The Shaykh : Yes, there is a sin on them for that, because severing family ties is forbidden and is one of the major sins. By family ties is meant kinship, and the closer the kinship, the more obligatory and emphatic the maintaining of those ties. It is not permissible for anyone to sever his family ties to please any of the people; rather, he must maintain his family ties and fulfill what Allah has made obligatory upon him. Then, if one is pleased with that, he has accepted what Allah has made obligatory, and that is better for him. And if he is not pleased, his anger is of no consequence. The important point is that maintaining family ties is obligatory, and it is not permissible to leave it off out of consideration for any of the people or to favor them.

The questioner : Yes.
