Boycotting those who commit major sins and persist in them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18336 )
Q: I have a brother who is undutiful to his parents. His father died while angry with him. He is the eldest of us, and he is also undutiful to his Lord, possessing great malice and meanness. He bears a grudge against me and my older brother, as I am the youngest, and he treats me badly. We all live in the same house.
When he married a girl who is a relative of my mother, the two of them became even more hateful and foolish toward everyone in the house. This was after my father passed away (may Allah have mercy on him). This woman quarreled with my mother on the day of 'Id al-Adha last year, on that great, blessed day, over a trivial problem that could have easily been resolved. She cursed us in front of us and in front of her husband, who helped her do so, and she cursed all of us. She left the house intending to file a complaint against my brother at the police station on that great day. Then, when she quarrels with her husband, she showers curses on everyone in the house, especially my mother. This pains me greatly, as I fear for my mother from this woman who is ugly in her essence. My mother is one of the believing women, as she prays and fulfills the pillars of Islam completely. From this, I hate this hard-hearted brother and this mean woman. My reaction to this hatred was that I do not speak to them, especially this wicked woman who wants to stoke the fires in our house with her lies. She is intelligent and shrewd, but she is intelligent in malice and sowing discord among people. I want to know if my boycotting them is considered cutting off family ties? I do speak to my brother, but if he asks me a question, I answer him only as much as is necessary. As for his wife, I do not speak to her, nor do I look at her, nor
her children, knowing that we live in the same house. I would like to say to your eminence: when I speak with this brother and we laugh together, the laughter of brothers, problems arise and quarrels break out between us. But when I avoid him and keep to myself, the problems end; because it is he who creates them and fabricates them, he and his wife and his children.

A : If the situation is as you described, you must be patient with the harm of your brother and his wife, and advise them and remind them of Allah the Exalted, so that perhaps Allah will guide them. If your brother is one of those who commit major sins and persist in them, and advice has not benefited him, it is prescribed for you to boycott him due to his open sinfulness by committing a major sin and to repel his harm. Along with this, it is also prescribed for you to continue advising him and reminding him of Allah the Exalted from time to time, so that perhaps he will accept the advice and rectify his own affairs and those of his wife. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
