Q: I have a married daughter who resides in Sudan , and she wrote to me a letter seeking advice and guidance regarding the matter of a woman leaving her house. She mentioned that she has confined herself to the house without leaving it at all, even to visit her close relatives; this is in response to the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Ahzab 33:33] verse (33) of Surat al-Ahzab. According to my knowledge and my persistence in reading the Qur'an, there are multiple verses that state the obligation of maintaining family ties, and there are also many Prophetic hadiths that encourage maintaining family ties, even if they have cut them off. Please inform us, may Allah reward you and may Allah reward you with good: What is the stronger position: that she should stay in her house without visiting or maintaining ties with close relatives, or that she should go out when necessary and to maintain family ties? May Allah reward you with good and keep you safe.
A : Your daughter should visit her close relatives who are her mahrams (relatives one may not marry) with her husband's permission, and she should be wearing hijab, covering her face, not wearing perfume, and not displaying her adornment. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
