The Method of Expiation for an Oath
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 19781 )
Q1: What is the method of expiating an oath by feeding ten poor Muslims, and is the expenditure required for each day or not? And how does one who does not find poor, monotheistic Muslims spend his expiation?
A1: One who is obligated to pay the expiation for an oath due to breaking it has the choice between feeding ten poor people, giving each poor person one and a half kilograms of wheat or rice or the staple food of the country, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If he does not find the means to do so, he fasts for three days. It is the same whether he feeds or clothes the poor people in one day or feeds and clothes them on separate days. It is permissible to give the expiation to one who appears to be a Muslim, for we take the appearance, and Allah takes care of the inner realities. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
