The Method of the Christians When They Slaughter Cattle and Birds
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 1078 )
Q 2: The method of the Christians when they slaughter cattle and birds is to fire a bullet from a gun that pierces the skull of the cow or sheep, killing it, and then they drain its blood . This is what I witnessed with my own eyes in the slaughterhouse regarding sheep and cattle, while chickens are strangled to death, as I have heard. Nevertheless, some Muslims ate from these animals, arguing for it by saying, “Allah the Exalted said:”[Al-Ma'idah 5:5] They also relied on a fatwa from some of the brothers at Al-Azhar permitting the eating of the aforementioned animals, provided the name of Allah is mentioned over them. It is known that we have two Muslim butchers, one of whom prays, and the other breaks his fast in Ramadan, and it is not known whether he attends the prayer. What is the solution, and what is the answer?
He knows that he is present for the prayer, so what is the solution, and what is the answer?
A 2: If the one who slaughters the cattle or birds is not a People of the Book, such as the disbelievers of Russia and Bulgaria and the like of them in atheism and rejection of religions, then their slaughtered meat is not eaten, whether the name of Allah is mentioned over it or not; because the original ruling is that only the slaughtered meat of Muslims is lawful, and the slaughtered meat of the People of the Book was excepted by explicit text. If, however, the one who slaughtered it is from the People of the Book ( the Jews or the Christians ), and if he slaughtered it by cutting its throat or performing al-nahr (slitting the throat) while it is alive and mentioned the name of Allah over it, it is eaten by consensus; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Ma'idah 5:5] And if the name of other than Allah is mentioned over it, it is not eaten, and it is carrion; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-An'am 6:121] And His saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:3] the verse. And if he strikes it in the head with a gun or subjects it to an electric current, for example, and it dies from that, then it is a struck animal, even if its throat is cut afterwards. Allah has forbidden it in His saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
, except if it is found alive with a stable life after its head was struck previously and then slaughtered, in which case it is eaten; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted at the end of this verse:[Al-Ma'idah 5:3] So the Exalted One excepted from the forbidden things that which is slaughtered if it is found alive; because slaughter has no effect on a dead animal. As for that which is strangled until it dies, or subjected to an electric current until it dies, it is not eaten by consensus, even if the name of Allah is mentioned over it when it is strangled or when the electricity is applied to it, or when it is eaten. And the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): was only regarding the slaughtered meat of people who had embraced Islam but were recent from the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, and it was not known whether they had mentioned the name of Allah over it or not? So he ordered the Muslims who were in doubt about the naming by these slaughterers to do what is required of them, which is to mention the name of Allah when eating, and to assume that these slaughterers did what is customary among Muslims, which is mentioning the name of Allah when slaughtering. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
