The first question of Fatwa No. ( 2236 )
Q 1: What is the correct Islamic method for slaughtering animals?
Volume 1 : A similar question was once directed to this authority, and His Eminence the Mufti, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him), gave a comprehensive answer, the text of which is as follows: Questions are sent to this institution regarding the prescribed manner of slaughter, and those who ask mention that they have witnessed and known practices that do not conform to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Given that this matter concerns both the general public and the specific,
we have decided that the answer should be issued in the form of a public announcement; in fulfillment of the trust and as advice to the Muslim community. We say: Know, may Allah guide us and you, that the prescribed slaughter has conditions and recommended practices. We will first present a general hadith, then mention the conditions, followed by the recommended practices. As for the hadith, it was narrated by Muslim and the compilers of the Sunan from Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1409Sahih (Darussalam) As for the conditions, there are four. The first is the qualification of the slaughterer, which requires that he be of sound mind, even if he is a child of discernment, and that he be a Muslim or a People of the Book whose parents are also People of the Book. The basis for this is what is established in (the two Sahihs) from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Sahih al-Bukhari 1 This hadith, and what is established in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad and the Sunan of Abu Dawud from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: Sunan ad-Daraqutni 3:5 Thus, every adult and child of discernment is described as being of sound mind, and for this reason, the intention of worship is valid from a child of discernment. And Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:5], and it is established in (Sahih al-Bukhari ) from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he interpreted their food as their slaughtered animals. The second condition is the instrument; slaughter is permissible with any sharp object that causes the blood to flow, except for a tooth or a nail. The basis for this is what al-Bukhari narrated in (his Sahih) Mishkat al-Masabih 3714. The third condition is cutting the windpipe, which is the passage of the breath, and the esophagus, which is the passage of
food, and the two carotid arteries. The basis for this is what is established in the Sunan of Abu Dawud ,Bulugh al-Maram 7:20. It is known that the prohibition in principle implies forbiddance, and in (the Sunan of Sa'id ibn Mansur ), from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), it is said: If the blood is poured out and the carotid arteries are cut, then eat. Its chain of narration is good. The place for cutting what is mentioned is the throat and the hollow, which is the depression between the base of the neck and the chest, and it is not permissible to slaughter anywhere else by consensus. 'Umar said: (Slaughter is in the hollow and the throat), and it is established in the Sunan of al-Daraqutni .
The fourth condition is the invocation of the Name of Allah; the slaughterer should say "In the Name of Allah" when he moves his hand to slaughter. The basis for this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-An'am 6:121], and He said: [Al-An'am 6:118]. Thus, Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, distinguished between the two states and differentiated between the two rulings. However, if the invocation is omitted due to forgetfulness, the slaughtered animal is lawful; based on what Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated in (his Sunan) . If any of these conditions is lacking, the slaughtered animal is not lawful. As for the recommended practices, they are as follows: 1, 2 - That the instrument be sharp, and that it be applied with force; based on the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan an-Nasa'i 4412Sahih (Darussalam). 3, 4 - That the sharpness of the instrument and the animal intended for slaughter not be visible to it, and that the slaughtered animal be hidden from the beasts at the time of slaughter; based on what is established in (the Musnad of Imam
Ahmad ), and what is established in al-Tabarani's Majma' al-Kabir and al-Majma' al-Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, . 5 - Orienting it toward the qiblah; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not slaughter an animal or sacrifice a hady except that he oriented it toward the qiblah. The camel should be standing with its left hand tied, and the sheep and cattle should be on their left side. 6 - Delaying breaking its neck and flaying it until it cools, meaning: after its soul has departed; based on the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Badil ibn Warqah al-Khuza'i on a white camel to call out in the open spaces of Mina with words
among which were:Sunan ad-Daraqutni 27:138 Narrated by al-Daraqutni . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
