The treatment that contains intoxicants

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 21097 )
Q: I found in one of the pharmacies in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah a medicine for teething called Dentinoc, which contains intoxicants, and it was not mentioned
by the name of intoxicants, but was mentioned by the name ethanol, which means intoxicants, as chemists know that. Shall I send you, O honorable Shaykh, with this letter the medicine’s brochure, and I hope that you, may Allah preserve you, will point out the necessity of stopping the import of this product from the country that manufactured it; which is Britain .

A: After consulting the specialists, it became clear that what the questioner mentioned is correct, namely that the aforementioned medicine contains the substance (ethanol) at a rate of 10.8%, and based on that, it is not permissible to treat oneself with the aforementioned medicine; for it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said regarding intoxicants:
It is certainly not a treatment, rather, it is a disease.إنها ليست بدواء ولكنها داء
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2046Sahih (Darussalam)
, and he also said, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him:
Allah has sent down both the disease and the cure, and He has appointed a cure for every disease, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.إن الله أنزل الداء وجعل لكل داء دواء، فتداووا ولا تداووا بالمحرم
Sunan Abi Dawud 3874Da'if (Al-Albani)
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
