Fatwa No. ( 17386 )
Q: If people name intoxicants by other than their name or name usury by other than its name
does that affect the reality of the prohibition?
A: Intoxicants are forbidden, as Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:90] The Sunnah clarified that khamr is the substance that covers the mind with intoxication, so any substance that causes intoxication is forbidden khamr, even if it is not named khamr. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Ibn Majah 3390Hasan (Darussalam) and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1865Hasan (Darussalam) Imam Abu Dawud narrated from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari - (may Allah be pleased with him) - from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan al-Bayhaqi 16:55 and Ibn Hibban graded it as authentic.
The same applies to usury; it is forbidden even if it is named by other than its name, such as calling it profit or commission or the like; it is forbidden. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

A: Intoxicants are forbidden, as Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.
Every intoxicant is Khamr (wine) and every Khamr is unlawful.
كل مسكر خمر وكل خمر حرامWhatever a lot of it intoxicates, a little of it is unlawful.
ما أسكر كثيره فقليله حرامSome people from my Ummah will drink khamr, naming it by other than its name
ليشربن أناس من أمتي الخمر يسمونها بغير اسمهاThe same applies to usury; it is forbidden even if it is named by other than its name, such as calling it profit or commission or the like; it is forbidden. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
