Feeding in the Expiation for Unintentional Killing

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 13887 )
Q: I inform Your Eminence that on the date 26/9/1409 AH, while I was heading from Riyadh to the south, there was a child and his family under one of the bridges on the aforementioned road. The child got up from his family and came up onto the bridge. When I reached the bridge, driving a Datsun car, he jumped in front of me, which resulted in my hitting him, and he died as a result of this accident after a week. My share of the fault was 25%. I know that I am required to fast for two months, but there are harsh circumstances: First, I am a military officer, and I work in a remote area, given the conditions of work and home. Knowing that when an opportunity arises, I am working for my family; because after Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), I am the only one who supports them. So, Your Eminence, is it permissible for me to spend on the weak and the poor, given my circumstances and my field work?
Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
.

A: You are obligated to perform the expiation for unintentional killing, which is: freeing a believing slave. If you do not find one, then fast for two consecutive months. Feeding does not suffice as an expiation for unintentional killing. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
