Expiation: Is Fasting Better or Feeding?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 8823 )
Q1: Regarding expiation, is fasting better or feeding, if the one who owes the expiation has a lot of money?
A1: Regarding the expiation for zihar and the expiation for intercourse during the day in Ramadan for the one who is fasting, it is obligatory to follow the order of its options: freeing a believing slave. If he does not find one, then fasting two consecutive months. If he is unable to do that, then feeding sixty poor people. Regarding the expiation for an oath, the one who breaks his oath is given the choice among its three options: feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. No text has been established that prefers one of them over the others.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
