Fatwa No. ( 8239 )
Q: Wethe Jizan district, especially the Bedouin areas. We have the habit of snorting, which is also called "al-shamma," and most of us are addicted to it. Some of them lead people in prayer in the mosques, and they are people of religion who are never satisfied with any evil, but they have not been able to give up this snuff. They have made a strong attempt to quit it, but unfortunately, they have not succeeded. Some people quit it and were afflicted with illnesses such as swelling of the mouth, swelling of the abdomen, bleeding gums, extreme anger, inability to perform tasks, and anxiety. Some of them had diarrhea. Allah delivered some of them from it, while others returned to it, and many did not even try to quit it. Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you with the best reward, regarding the extent of the impact on the religion of one who tried but could not, and whether his fasting, prayer, and Hajj are valid. What is the amount of expiation for one who could not part with it? Because many were unable to leave it, what is the expiation?
A: It is forbidden to use al-shamma, and it is obligatory for the user to quit it by having a sincere resolve, being strong in will to leave it, and increasing in the remembrance of Allah and seeking forgiveness. The prayer, fasting, and Hajj of the user are valid if he fulfills
the conditions of validity for each of them, and the use of al-shamma has no effect on that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
