Discussion of the cases of smelling perfume for one in the state of ihram.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Now, if one uses a perfume stick, he has applied perfume to himself, and that is forbidden for him. If he intentionally smells a perfume, it is forbidden for him. There is scholarly disagreement on this issue. Some scholars said that intentionally smelling a perfume is not a problem and is not forbidden, because he did not use it; he merely smelled it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said
Do not apply perfumed ointment to him لا تحنطوه
and said
Do not wear a garment that has been touched by saffron or orsa. لا تلبسوا ثوباً مسه الزعفران والورس
Smelling does not affect a person, neither his garment nor his body. Others said that if he intentionally smells it to enjoy it, then it is forbidden. But if he intentionally smells it for a need, such as testing whether this perfume is good or bad, then there is nothing wrong with it. This is closer to the truth: if you intentionally smell it to enjoy it, it is forbidden; if you intentionally smell it for a purpose other than enjoying it, it is permissible; and if you smell it unintentionally, such that it enters your nostrils without your intent, then there is nothing wrong with it.
