If the imam has to perform the prostration for forgetfulness after the taslim, and the ma'mum is masbuq, does he prostrate with him for forgetfulness after the taslim, or does he complete his prayer and then prostrate for forgetfulness?

The questioner : But if some of the ma'mum join the prayer late and miss some rak'ahs, but the forgetfulness or the error occurred in the part they caught up with, and if the prostration for forgetfulness is delayed until after the taslim, they will stand up immediately after the taslim to complete their prayer. Is it permissible in this case for them to prostrate with the imam for forgetfulness, and then stand up afterwards to complete what they missed?

The Shaykh : There is scholarly disagreement on this. The well-known position in the Hanbali school is that they follow the imam in prostrating after the taslim, but they do not say the taslim. I mean, if someone missed part of the prayer and the imam's prostration is after the taslim, the well-known position in the Hanbali school is that they prostrate with the imam without saying the taslim with him.

The questioner : The first taslim?

The Shaykh : They do not say the taslim with him, neither the first nor the second, because their prayer is not complete. But they follow him in the prostration. Then, when he finishes and says the taslim from the prostration for forgetfulness, they stand up to make up what they missed.
Some scholars say that they do not follow the imam in prostrating after the taslim, because following is impossible, as following the imam must include saying the first taslim before the prostration, and this is impossible for someone who missed part of the prayer. Accordingly, they stand up without following him. Then, when they stand up and complete their prayer, if the imam's forgetfulness was in the part they caught up with, they prostrate for forgetfulness after the taslim. If it was in the previous part, they did not catch up with the imam in it, so they are not required to prostrate in that case. This is the stronger position in my view, because following the imam and prostrating after the taslim is practically impossible.

The questioner : Yes, may Allah reward you.
