Q: We inform you, O honorable Shaykh, that my father owes the expiation for accidental killing, but he is unable to free a slave or fast for two consecutive months due to his illness and advanced age. Is there an alternative expiation for it? May Allah reward you with good for the Muslims and preserve you? And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
A: If your father is unable to free a slave due to his poverty, and unable to fast due to his illness, then the expiation for accidental killing remains a debt upon him until he is able to free a slave or fast after Allah the Exalted heals him.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
