Fatwa number ( 18246 )
Q: I inform Your Eminence and seek your ruling, as an accident happened to us, namely: a camel was struck, and my wife and my servant died with me , and I also fell into a coma for six months. Now, praise be to Allah, my health has improved, but I am unable to fast for four months because I am advanced in age. As for Ramadan, perhaps Allah will help me and I will fast it. My financial situation is good, and I am most eager to clear my conscience. Therefore, I ask you to rule on what I should do? May Allah guide you to what He loves and is pleased with, and prolong your life in obedience to Allah.
A: If you bear a share of the accident, even if it is small, then you owe two expiations for the two women who died with you due to the accident. Each expiation is the freeing of a believing slave. If you do not find one, then you must fast two consecutive months for each of them. And if you are currently unable
to perform the expiation as mentioned, then the expiation remains a debt on your conscience until you are able to perform it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
