Fatwa number ( 15946 )
Q: MyMy wife placed our infant daughter in the hammock— which is similar to the cradles used for children in the markets — and then hung it by a rope from a wooden beam in the ceiling of the hut we live in, because we are Bedouins in the Qahtan region of Tihama. After a while, when she returned from the sheep, she found that the girl had fallen to the ground because of the rope to which the hammock was tied; it was a small type of nylon, and although she had folded it into three loops, the movement of the girl and the swinging caused the wooden beam to affect it until it snapped, and
my wife did not learn of this until after the rope had broken. Blood began to flow from our infant daughter’s nose as a result, and she remained ill until she passed away. We fear that there may be an expiation due on my wife, so we hope for your guidance.

A: It is obligatory for her to pay the expiation because she was negligent in using a rope that was not strong. The expiation is: freeing a believing slave. If she does not find one, she must fast for two consecutive months. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
