Fatwa number ( 19337 )
Q: I am a woman with five children, and Allah has decreed and willed for me to become pregnant with a sixth child. I am a nervous person, and my body cannot withstand pregnancy. I visited a friend at one of the hospitals and asked her for help. She prescribed abortion pills, and I used them at home. Within a few days, my husband took me to the hospital, and they induced the delivery of the child due to severe bleeding. This was approximately one and a half months into
the pregnancy. After that, I felt intense regret. Therefore, I am presenting this problem to you, may Allah preserve you, hoping for a response from Allah and then from you with urgency; because I am living my worst days

A: The default ruling regarding a woman’s pregnancy is that it is not permissible to terminate it at any stage except for a valid legal reason. If the pregnancy is still in the stage of the nutfah (embryo), which is forty days or less, and there is a legal benefit in terminating it or a prevention of harm expected to befall the mother, then it is permissible to terminate it in this case. This does not include the fear of hardship in raising the children, or the inability to afford their costs or upbringing, or being content with a certain number of children, or similar non-legal justifications. However, if the pregnancy exceeds forty days, it becomes forbidden to terminate it; because after forty days it becomes an alaqah (clot), which is the beginning of the creation of the human being, so it is not permissible to terminate it after it reaches this stage until a reliable medical committee determines that continuing the pregnancy poses a danger to the mother’s life, and that she is in fear of death if the pregnancy continues. Accordingly, your decision to terminate the pregnancy after it reached one and a half months on your own, on the pretext that you are nervous and that your body cannot withstand pregnancy, is a decision to commit a forbidden act. It is obligatory for you to make sincere repentance from it, and not to return to such a bad act in the future.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
