Abortion for Necessity

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
All praise is due to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. After that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the honorable: member of the Da'wah and Guidance Department in the Hail region, Shaykh Hamd ibn 'Abd Allah al-Hamd , which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (8751) and date 17/10/1422 AH. His Honor asked a question, the text of which is as follows:
Ahmad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Salih al-Mutawwi , the husband of Fatimah bint Yusuf al-'Alayt , came to me with medical reports attached to the question indicating that the aforementioned woman suffers from high blood pressure and takes medication for this condition. She experienced a severe rise in blood pressure during her previous pregnancy, which put her life in danger, and the child died a few days after being placed in the incubator. Question: Is abortion permissible in the situation as described, knowing that she is in her seventh week of pregnancy as of 10/10/1422 AH? Attached is the medical report from Hail General Hospital, number (4268/2/43), dated 10/10/1422 AH, which states the following: Upon medical examination of Mrs. Fatimah Yusuf 'Abd Allah al-'Alayt , it was found that she is in her seventh week of pregnancy and suffers from high blood pressure (140/100) while using medication to control the pressure. She experienced a severe rise in blood pressure during her previous pregnancy, accompanied by impaired fetal growth in the womb, which put both her life and the fetus's life in danger. A cesarean section was performed on her at 28 weeks, and the child was placed in the incubator where he died. There is a high probability that this will recur in the current pregnancy, which may put her life in danger.

After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered that if the matter is as described
regarding the danger to the mother's life due to the retention of the fetus, then there is no objection to terminating the pregnancy after exhausting all means to avert that danger. If there is no danger to the mother's life, then it is not permissible to abort the fetus.
