Oath not to marry a man who proposed to his sister after hearing about him, then it became clear to him that what he heard was false, so he married her to him

Fatwa number ( 1102 )
Q: A man proposed to the questioner’s sister, so he forbade his family from marrying her to him twice, on the condition that he did not know his religion and his uprightness, and he had received reports about him that were not satisfactory. Then he learned from trustworthy people that the suitor was a man of religion and uprightness, so his opinion of him changed. He and his family unanimously—his mother, the fiancée, and the eldest brother—wanted him to marry her to him. It is known that one of the questioner’s relatives mentioned that he also swore that he would not marry her to him, but the questioner has no knowledge of this and did not mention it. In fact, we gave this man authority over her, and my eldest brother conducted the marriage contract for her to him with my consent, based on the trustworthy reports of his religion and uprightness. I hope you will issue a ruling on what has been mentioned.

A: If the matter is as described, that the questioner only forbade his family from marrying his sister to this man twice because of his ignorance of his religion and uprightness, and that he had received reports about him that were not satisfactory, and that one of his relatives testified that he swore, but the questioner does not remember how many times he swore, nor does he know about it, and then it became clear to the questioner that the suitor was upright and religious, so he agreed to marry his sister to him and the authority was given to him over her—if the matter is so, then he does not break his oath in forbidding, nor in his divorce, by marrying his sister to that person, even if it is established that he swore, because the reason for preventing the marriage was his initial belief that the man was not religious or his ignorance of his state. Then he learned of his state from trustworthy people, and it became clear to him that he was religious, of good character, and upright, and he agreed to marry her to him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
