The third question of Fatwa No. ( 16817 )
Q3: A womanwhose husband passed away four years ago, and a week after his death, her awliya (close friends of Allah) moved her from her home to their residence, and prevented her from continuing to complete her waiting periodclaiming that she owes nothing for leaving her waiting period due to their ignorance. Does she owe an expiation? She is in pain because she sees her husband in a dream, and he is angry with her, and this matter is beyond her control.
A3: It is obligatory for a widow to remain in her husband’s house until her waiting period ends, if she is able to do so; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the widow to do so. If she moves from it for a valid legal excuse, such as being unable to
remain in it, or if she is not permitted to remain in it, there is no harm in her moving to another place, and she owes nothing for that. From this, it is known that this woman has no blame on her for moving from her husband’s house before completing the waiting period if she was forced to do so. If she was lax in this matter, she must repent to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and sincere repentance is obligatory for what preceded it. The dreams she sees are from Satan, so when she wakes up from her sleep, she should spit dryly to her left three times, and seek refuge in Allah from Satan and from the evil of what she saw three times, then turn over to her other side. These dreams will not harm her, and she should not tell anyone about them; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
