Q: I am a citizen of Egyptian nationality, residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , and I have committed a sin. In a moment of anger, I said to
my group of friends: I will not eat with you, and you are forbidden to me as the back of my mother and my sister. By this, I meant my wife, as I am married and have children. In fact, I did not eat with them for three days. Then a dear friend came to visit us and swore that I would eat with them, and I did eat with them. I have committed an oath, so what should I do to make expiation for the oath? Please advise us, may Allah reward you, and I offer you my sincere thanks.
A: If your prohibition of eating with them was intended for a specific, limited time, and that time ended without you eating with them, then you owe nothing. However, if you intended to abstain from eating with them absolutely, and then you ate with them, it is obligatory for you to make expiation for zihar. This is: freeing a believing slave. If you cannot find one, then fasting for two consecutive months. If you are unable to do that, then feeding sixty poor people. And you must repent to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
